  • Every child can learn Mathematics

It is said that Mathematics is the gate and key of the Science. According to a famous Philosopher Kant, "Science is exact only in so far as it employs Mathematics".  In this modern age of Science and Technology, emphasis is given to Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, and Engineering. However, the progress of all these field of sciences is made possible with the aid of Mathematics. Therefore, it is aptly remarked, "Mathematics is a Science of all Sciences and art of all arts." Mathematics is an important part of everybody's life. All individuals require basic mathematical knowledge and skills in their daily lives.  It is obvious that learning mathematics helps to think logically and solve problems using that skill. It also teaches one to be precise in thoughts and words.  According to the Britannica Concise encyclopaedia, “Mathematics is the science of structure, order and relation that has evolved from counting, measuring and describing the shapes of objects. It deals with logical reasoning and quantitative calculation.” Imagine how it would be like if there was no mathematics; how were months, years etc, we going to count days.  Ideally, we live a mathematical world. Whenever we decide to do some shopping, choose between different options that are present to us at a time or decide on our future, we unequivocally rely on mathematical understandings. Also, for instance, the computers, mobile phones, vehicles, et cetera that are widely used in our daily activities are made or built based on some mathematical principles.   Therefore, mathematics is a tool that is vital to our everyday life and one must utilize it either knowingly or unknowingly; the tailor in his shop, the carpenter, the mechanic, the accountant, down to the illiterate, the cook at the kitchen; they all need mathematics for their daily survival. As an illustrative example, imagine that you wake up early in the morning to get to your workplace or to school every weekday and you should be there by 9:00a.m.  If it takes about 45 minutes to get to your desired destination from home, what do you do? You will probably make sure you get up early and be on your way to the desired destination latest by 8:15a.m.  How on earth did you know and arrange these timings so that you wouldn’t be late for work or school? This was done through addition and subtraction of minutes, which is obviously mathematics. Many a time, students come across problems like this in mathematics tests or exams but many are not able to solve them because they are not able to relate the question with their personal experience.  So, the pedagogy of Mathematics is very essential and should very carefully be built in different levels of school education.

At root international school, we are very conscious of this matter.  We, root Family have developed a slogan “Every child can learn Mathematics” and we are concerned with how each and every child learns mathematics in easy and enjoyable way.

In order to achieve our target and to fulfill our vision, we provide full training to all mathematics teachers regarding the overall annual plan of academic session, annual plan, grid and pattern of questions, model questions with marking schemes. We also provide ideas about how to present in the class, how to teach particular topic, what materials to be used, et cetera in detail.  Consequently, teachers will be ready to tackle each and every problem that might arise during session.

We, department of mathematics, use a variety of strategies and approaches to teach mathematics so that every child can understand mathematics in easy and enjoyable way.  We have been getting excellent result in SLC, which also verifies that we are successful in our mission.  As we all know that different child has different capacities and interest, so we try our level best to identify each and every student’s interest, their capacity to grasp things presented in the class.  We have ICD Department that discusses about individual students and follows the progress of individual student accordingly.

To expose the hidden talent in mathematics, we have established a mathematic club, named PIE-Maths Club. It is a great way for students to develop intuitive thinking skills and learn horizons of math. Furthermore, they will learn to view math not as a set of rules or guidelines, but as an art. Besides the academic benefits, math club is also a great way to meet new people, develop teamwork skills, and prepare Wall Magazine once in two months. To provide students more information, facts, interesting discovery in mathematics, we are going to initiate a page in our school’s website.  To expose students’ talent and make them confidence in their subject matter, we provide them platform Kathmandu STEM FEST.   To make students more competitive in study part, we will conduct Quiz contest chapter wise from the coming session.
